The University of Kentucky is putting together their list of potential coaches to replace Tubby Smith who moved onto the University of Minnesota. it includes a list of who’s who of coaching. The list includes Tom Izzo from Michigan State, Gonzaga head coach Mark Few, Florida coach Billy Donovan, Marquette’s Tom Crean, Memphis’ John Calipari and Notre Dame’s Mark Brey. These are some of the hottest up and coming coaches in the college basketball ranks at the moment. To many coaching at the University of Kentucky would be a dream job with the major support from the university and surrounding community.

Who is the Kentucky’s top choice? Many people are saying Tom Izzo who has done a tremendous job at Michigan State and has a strong class of freshman currently. Izzo has shown strong loyalty to Michigan State, but potentially could leave with the right mix of money and support from Kentucky. It will be interesting to see if Kentucky gets the coach they are looking for or must settle for a second tier coach at the moment.

The man who coached the Wildcats for 10 seasons and compiled a 263-83 record, will be leaving the University of Kentucky so he can be the new head basketball coach at the University of Minnesota. Smith’s new position will be announced on Friday at a news conference in Minneapolis. The move is not a big surprise even though Smith was extremely successful at Kentucky. He finally fell out of favor with boosters and fans after this year’s modest 22-12 record.
